Dr. Nunzia Esercizio graduated in Biology in 2017 at the University of Naples Federico II with a score of 110/110 cum laude. In 2018-2019 she carried out a postgraduate internship at the Institute of Biomolecular Chemistry, ICB-CNR in Pozzuoli, under the supervision of Dr. Giuliana d’Ippolito and Prof. Angelo Fontana, taking an interest in the study of thermophilic bacteria for bio-hydrogen production and the optimization of fermentation culture parameters. In 2023 she obtained PhD in Biology at the University of Naples Federico II, presenting a thesis entitled “Characterization of the Capnophilic Lactic Fermentation pathway and molecular approaches in the hyperthermophilic bacterium Thermotoga neapolitana”. The research activity, which took place at the ICB-CNR Institute of Biomolecular Chemistry in Pozzuoli and under the supervision of prof. Angelo Fontana concerned the biochemical characterization of the CLF pathway in Thermotoga neapolitana, with the analysis of enzymes and metabolic flows. The study also concerned the gene manipulation of the strain and the optimization of production in selected conditions. In this regard, in 2019, the doctor was a guest at the Life Science department of Bowling Green University (Ohio, USA) under the supervision of Prof. Zhaohui Xu, to acquire the main genetic manipulation techniques applicable to thermophilic bacteria. In 2024, Dr. Nunzia Esercizio obtains a fixed-term researcher contract at the ICB in Pozzuoli as part of the H2 – AdC ENEA/CNR POR IDROGEN project, delving into the bioenergetic aspects of the bio hydrogen production pathways in Thermotogales, for the development of a microbial platform for technological exploitation with high yields and versatility of substrates use.
