Margherita Gavagnin Capoggiani
Experience & Activities
Margherita Gavagnin Capoggiani received her doctoral degree in organic chemistry in 1983 from University of Naples. After spending a postdoctoral year at the Institute of Organic Chemistry of Naples, in 1985 she moved, as researcher of the Italian National Council of Research, to the Institute of Chemistry of Molecules of Biological Interest (ICMIB), now ICB, where she has been First Researcher (2001-2006) and subsequently Research Director (from 2006 up to now).
The scientific activity during her entire career has been mainly oriented to the structure elucidation of new natural products from marine invertebrates, in particular heterobranch molluscs. In recent years, the research interest has been mainly focused to the discovery of new antitumor molecules from molluscs, sponges and marine plants and to the investigation of terrestrial plants used In traditional medicine from desert regions of North Africa.
She has been in charge of research project management in CNR, responsible of several national research projects and bilateral co-operation programmes, and coordinator of the EU project, FP7-People-2013 Intra-European-Fellowship “Chimica Marina a Napoli” (2014-2016). She has been member of Scientific Council of ICMIB (1993-2001) and member of ICB Committee (2009-2015). From 2017 she is member of the steering committee of the Bachelor’s degree course in chemistry of University of Naples.
